After win, what is next for Travis Lutter?

Former UFC vet and The Ultimate Fighter season 4 winner Travis Lutter achieves his first win against Jason MacDonald unanimously decided by the Maximum Fighting Championship judges. This marks his first professional win since being cut by the UFC after losing to both Rich Franklin and Anderson Silva.

Most remember Travis Lutter for one of two reasons, if not both: winning TUF season 4 by defeating Patrick Cote by submission and/or not making weight in what should have been his Middleweight championship fight against Silva.

Not making weight for a title fight? Probably one of the biggest sins that you can make in the UFC or in MMA, period. The fans will hate you, and what is even worse is that Dana White will probably not be a happy camper.

Do you see Dana's face?

Now Lutter fights in small promotions. It’s been 18 months since Lutter has fought and he scored, what I think, is a big win against MacDonald. Lutter is 36 years old, and really doesn’t have that much long left to make something out of his MMA career if this is what he wants to do. If not, no big deal. He has his successful Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gym in Fort Worth, Texas.

This is kind of a long blog for me. Mainly because I like the guy. He’s from around my area, and I know people who have nothing bad to say about the guy personally. So I root for him.

Joe Silva told Jason MacDonald, who is also a UFC vet, that if he scored a couple wins on his record then the UFC would open their doors back to him. I don’t see why they cannot do the same for Lutter. I mean, he is the only TUF winner to be let go from his UFC contract. But he’s also the only one that failed to make weight for a championship fight.

What is next for Lutter? Does he keep competing in the MFC? I think he has the ability to make it in a larger organization. Strikeforce or WEC, anyone? And maybe if he wants back in the UFC, this is his best option. Strikeforce is now on Showtime and CBS. That is huge publicity for him. Especially for new fans or broke-ass fans who can’t afford UFC PPVs.
